Clever News August 2020

Clever-- some of you are Clever pros and some are just experiencing the glory of Clever for the first time. Let me offer some information to help.

FIRST--- I want to let you know that when a system is updating and automating, it is sometimes not accessible to the user. THIS MEANS that you might try to access Clever right now to see what I'm talking about and it won't work, or tell you that you can't sign in or something.  Please give our resident ninja Mel and Clever some time and try over the weekend before putting in a tech ticket because something doesn't work.

But I do want to share some details that might help.

What is Clever?

Clever is a Single Sign on service that allows students to sign through once, then it passes them through to another program already signed in.  These services are in a category called Instant Login.  We are also able to add shortcuts (in the Shortcut category) that are just bookmarks, but probably won't sign the student into the link.

Clever is a service that is purchases at a district level to keep things in one place as much as possible, and to automate some account creation and generate class lists, automatically enrolling students into a class for you.  For example, this is how Seesaw and Khan Academy will have your class lists.

How do students and teachers sign into Clever?

On every school webpage, there is a CLEVER LOGIN link in the Menu under Student Shortcuts.  That link works for you too.  It does need to be the Hueneme specific link, but it is the same for staff and students.  You can sign in with Google, or students have the option of using Clever login to make it easier.  Note that Clever login may not always give them access to things that require Google Sign in (but in the case of Seesaw, it does. I tested it)

On iPads:

  • Find the Clever logo (it looks like an app, it is actually a webclip)

On Chromebooks (or computer):

  • Go to the School webpage
  • Click Menu and look in Student Shortcuts
  • Click Clever Login

What is automated in Clever?

All the things listed below are available in Clever, but they won't all include a student roster. Let me sort them for you.

Clever WILL Roster

Note: this depends on when your class is assigned in Q. Be patient. Check on Monday
  • Seesaw for Preschool-2nd grades
  • Khan Academy
  • Learning A-Z
  • SORA Digital Library (more info coming later)
  • Talking Points (eventually, this is not ready yet)

Clever WILL NOT roster

Note: of course you can use them, but your class will not be rostered automatically
  • Google Classroom
  • Newsela
  • Brain Pop
There are probably more things than I will list right here, but this is a start.

Again, hope this helps,
Liz

  1. Hi Liz,
I love that you have this Blog! I'm new to Clever...
Question: Is there Instant Login to Zoom?
    Is this a possibility?
Can I tell my students to:
    Go to Clever
    Go to Ms' Staley's Page
    Go to Zoom
    Go to Ms Staley's Meeting

    Thank You!

    1. Hi Melissa, I may have said it incorrectly in the past, but Zoom is not something students will see in Clever. It is only there for staff. As I understand it today. It may be different in the future.

  2. Is email open to third graders this year? If so, how do I help them open the account.

    1. Yes, email is open to all students via their Google account. TK-2nd students have information on their merged account information page that will show them how to get the gmail app out of self service and sign in. 3rd-8th graders go to mail.google.com on their Chromebook.

This is also a great opportunity to start teaching students about appropriate ways to communicate over email (like, don't type your whole message in the subject, and begin with a friendly greeting---- is this the new "friendly letter"? maybe!) as well as inbox management (archive messages you might need later, delete messages like notifications)
